Kep-sur-Mer, as it was named by the
French, was a popular weekend
getaway in the country's colonial past.

tortured between 14,000 and 20,000
men, women and children in these
former school buildings.

The classical Apsara dance was
created by the Royal Ballet of
Cambodia in the 1940s.
During the Khmer Rouge regime
between 1975 and 1979, many of the
dancers were killed in the genocide.
In 2003 the Apsara dance was
inducted in the UNESCO Intangible
Cultural Heritage List.
